Psoriasis – eat a sponge?

Avarol, extracted from a sea sponge, inhibits NF-kB and so improves psoriasis

NF-kB activation is decreased in the skin when avarol is applied, leading to reduced inflammation and improvement in psoriasis.

This is just one of hundreds of studies suggesting that inhibition of NF-kB is an effective treatment for psoriasis.

Summary of the abstract

Avarol is a marine sesquiterpenoid hydroquinone with interesting pharmacological properties including anti-inflammatory and antipsoriatic effects.

In the present study the pharmacological effect of avarol on some inflammatory parameters related to the pathogenesis of psoriasis.

Avarol inhibited tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and TNF-alpha-induced activation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB).

In the psoriasis-like mouse model of psoriasis, topical administration of avarol reduced edema and inflammation.

Avarol was also capable of suppressing in vivo (in life – vs. “in vitro” which means “in glass” or “in a test tube”) NF-kappaB activation on mouse skin.

The results suggested that the antipsoriatic properties of avarol result, at least in part, from decreasing inflammation and inhibiting NF-kB.
