Inflammatory bowel disease refers to ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, both of which are autoimmune conditions primarily affecting the intestinal tract.
Ulcerative colitis affects the large intestine (colon.) Inflammation most often occurs near the rectum and affects only the inner lining of the colon.
Crohn's disease most often affects the end of the small intestine and/or the colon, but can affect any part of the alimentary canal - from mouth to anus. The inflammation of Crohn's tends to involve the entire thickness of the intestinal wall.
