Enhanced cholinergic-mediated increase in the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 in irritable bowel syndrome: role of muscarinic receptors.

Summary of the Abstract

Irritable bowel syndrome has been linked to immune activation. The pro-inflammatory cytokine profile in irritable bowel syndrome is investigated.

Both IL-6 and IL-8 are found to be elevated in those with irritable bowel syndrome.

It is concluded that irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by a pro-inflammatory cytokine profile.
